Diving like any pastime requires practice to perfect existing skills and to learn new ones and this is where the PADI Advanced Open Water Course comes in. Most people assume that the Advanced Open Water Course is for 'advanced' divers due to it's slightly misleading name and that they need vast amounts of dive experience to take part or on the other hand, they believe they will be greatly experiened once they have completed.
What the course is really about is growing an Open Water diver's skill base through 5 fun filled open water dives and through the PADI reading material and Knowledge Reviews. Each dive is actually Dive 1 from a PADI Specialty course, so the skills that are taught are a taster of the skills that can be learned on the full specialty courses that are available.
The dives that can be conducted on the course are a Peak Performance Buouyancy dive, Underwater Navigation, a Deep dive to a maximum depth of 30m, a Night dive (during winter), a Wreck dive (outside of wreck only), Search and Recovery, Dry Suit (a pool orientation is required for this) and many more.
Once qualified, an Advanced Open Water diver will be allowed to dive to a depth of 30m when conditions allow. This depth rating is why many people embark on this course.
For the diver who has been diving for a number of years, this is a chance to brush up on skills, unlearn any bad habits that may have formed, try new equiopment and learn new skills that they may not have. In essence this course is aimed at not just the experienced diver, but also at the new diver.
By taking part in this course you will not only gain confidence in your diving ability, but gain the freedom to take part in a wide variety of dives.
This course emphasises student involvement in all aspects of dive planning and gives them the ability to safely plan the dives independently once the course is finished.
If you are unsure about what interests to follow in diving or just want to improve your skills then this is the course for you.
